The house belongs to the landscape architect Nathan Burkett, who asked the studio to formalise his vision for a secluded site on the Mornington Peninsula. Against the light, white tones usual in coastal houses it takes a darker, textural approach: the gabled forms of rural and coastal buildings, clad entirely in vertical boards of charred timber, so the house recedes and the landscape becomes the focus. Beside the main gable a flat-roofed terrace is carried on black steel beams, with the pool wrapping the back of the house to reflect light into the rooms and an outdoor fireplace built into the rendered chimney. Inside the palette reverses to white: v-groove panelled walls under a raked ceiling with its rafters exposed, oak floors and joinery, a white steel-framed island with pale veined stone, and bouclé furniture in muted greens and tans, styled with Simone Haag. The finishes are robust and the detailing urban, for a low-maintenance holiday home.
