The brief called for a flexible layout, highly functional spaces and an environment that was cosy and warm. The plan expands and contracts with use, while charred timber cladding ties the house to its rural setting. Inside, the roof is the room: deep timber rafters painted a soft green run the length of the living space and out over the kitchen, and the walls beneath are finished in warm plaster and pale oak, with a bank of oak cupboards forming the spine between living and bedrooms. A stone hearth and a dark steel fireplace anchor the sitting room, and the kitchen is a free-standing bench of pale timber with a stone top, placed against the windows so the valley is in view while cooking. Warmth comes from the layering of texture, material and colour, each chosen for robustness in a hard-working family home. Built by Otto Projects, with landscape by Nathan Burkett Landscape Architecture and photography by Timothy Kaye. Shortlisted for Residential Design at the 2025 Australian Interior Design Awards.
